Standard Gauge Railway (SBR) in Tanzania
Tanzania is currently expanding its rail network with the construction of a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to connect the country to its neighbors and reduce freight costs. The project is being implemented in five phases and has invested 23 trillion Tanzanian shillings as of July 2023. The Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway is a railway system, under construction and partially in operation, linking the country to the neighboring countries of Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, and through these to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as part of the East African Railway Master Plan.
The agreement for the construction of the project with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Railway Construction Company (CRCC) was signed on 20th December 2022. The SGR project is progressing towards a significant milestone with the upcoming launch of the 300km section connecting the port city of Dar es Salaam to Morogoro. After successful trials in February, full operations on the newly built electrified line are set to commence by July, according to chief government. The project is expected to boost the country’s economy by reducing transportation costs and increasing trade between Tanzania and its neighbors.

Fare Details:
1. Normal Class Train:
– Dar es Salaam to Dodoma: TSH 31,000
– Dar es Salaam to Morogoro: TSH 13,000
2. Express Train:
– Dar es Salaam to Dodoma:TSH 50,000
– Dar es Salaam to Morogoro: TSH 22,000
Children aged 4 to 12 years will pay half the adult fare, while those under 4 years travel for free.
